Personal Essay Pirate Draft

I have something to prove, more so to myself than anybody else. I love learning new things, especially if the things that I’m learning are aligned towards my goals and dreams. However, there is one thing about me that you guys still don’t know.  I’m not a quitter. Once I set my mind to something that I really want to do, I do whatever it takes to accomplish that goal. I don’t care how many obstacles I have to overcome or how many things I have to endure and push through in my life. As long as I get to where I want to be, then that’s all that matters to me. I’ll keep fighting for my dreams until the very end. I’m very ambitious and I know that when the going gets tough, that’s when I’ll have to shine brighter than anyone else. I’m very confident and I have a lot of faith in what I can do for myself.

If you guys still don’t believe me, then let me share something with you. I came from Puerto Rico to New York City with my family when I was 7 years old. Spanish being my Native language, I couldn’t understand what the people were saying to me when they were speaking English, especially in school. I felt like an outsider; I was lost in a maze. I had a hard time learning as a result of it. But then, something happened. My mom, who didn’t know even the tiniest drop of English, got a job. Even though it might not mean much to other people, it meant a lot to me. She inspired me and taught me that with enough hard work, there were no limits towards what people can accomplish in their life.

While I was still in the learning phase when it came down to the fundamentals and the basics of the English language, it was very difficult for me to grasp the things that were happening around my surroundings. It was very nerve wracking and scary since I was basically a small fish in a big pond. Even with all this, I had to accept the fact that what was happening to me at the time, was reality. Lacking the ability to communicate with my classmates and teachers and asking them for help and guidance when I needed it the most was something that really terrified me to the core. Fortunately, at the end of the day, I didn’t let that stop me in my path to strive for greatness. For example, when I was trying to read a children’s book in front of my class in the second grade, most of my classmates were making fun of my ability to read English properly because of my Spanish accent. During that moment, I felt destroyed because at the back of my mind, I thought that all of my efforts and hardships that I was going through at the time were going to end up in vain. However, I didn’t let them get to me and I constantly told myself that I’m not alone in this. With my family by my side, our unity would prove to be our strength and bond. It’s one of my biggest motivating factors in my life that keeps me going because I didn’t let my situation that was having a negative impact on me, determine my success and future.
